Karma WiFi HotSpot

karma-wifi-hotspot-03

Until the whole world has free WiFi we turn to things like the Karma WiFi HotSpot to hold us over. It’s not exactly free, but for the average business man who relies on his mobile devices, it definitely gets the job done. You start off with 1GB of data for $14 and anything used after that will be on a pay-as-you go basis, but you’ll also have the opportunity to receive 100MB of free data every time someone connects to your hotspot. Say you’re at an airport with Karma, someone finds your open WiFi signal and connects, a screen pops up prompting them to create an account, and when they do both you and the user who connected to your hotspot will earn 100MB of free data. Who knows, If you’re a frequent traveler you may never end up paying for data again.

Blackphone

Blackphone-00

At first glance it may look like a regular phone, but really the Blackphone was developed to protect you from the NSA. Yes, the NSA. We aren’t really sure if this is even legal, but we like the fact that somebody is actually standing up for our rights. Getting down to business, it’s the world’s first smartphone that prioritizes a users privacy and control. It has all of the features to do everything you want and everything you need, just like any other smartphone out there. Make and receive secure phone calls, exchange secure texts, exchange and store secure files, have a secure video chat, browse privately and anonymize your activity all through a VPN. Blackphone is unlocked and works with any GSM carrier (AT&T and T-Mobile), is Android-based (without usual compromises) and is ready to take the NSA head-on.

Motorola Project Ara

motorola-project-ara-00

Remember we posted about Phonebloks a few weeks back? Motorola Project Ara has been a work in progress for about a year now, and after recently consulting with the creator of Phonebloks it seems they’ve discovered that their visions are identical. That vision is to bring an open source hardware platform to the forefront of mobile technology by developing an endoskeleton (endo) and modules. The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place, while a module can be anything from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, or something that hasn’t even been invented yet. You can find out more about the future of mobile technology and open source hardware in our writeup on Phonebloks.

Phonebloks

Phonebloks-Customized-Phone-01

While everyone was busy raving about the new iPhone 5S and 5C, Phonebloks, a concept developed by Dave Hakkens, was in the background saying FTW as their concept became a hit overnight and U.O.E.N.O it! It’s basically the ultimate customization for a mobile phone; being made of detachable blocks that are connected to a platform (the platform can also adapt to different sizes letting you create a tablet or even a camera), which then locks everything together to make a phone-looking device. You’ll be able to purchase the Bloks individually, then build your phone to its own standard by adding stuff like a camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, battery, storage and much more – it’s described as an app store, but for hardware. You’ll also be able to sell old Bloks while reading reviews about new ones, buy a pre-assembled phone, or assemble it yourself buy choosing specific brands you want to use. It’s customization at a whole different level.

Google, again is expanding their capabilities with Google Earth. Using new technology, that builds on expansive ideas they’ve used since 2006. Google Earth will present 45 degree aerial imagery for mobile map devices. The new technology allows for textured renderings, 3D cityscapes and buildings that take on distinct and unique characteristics to that particular city. By the end of the year, Google aims to have 3D coverage for metropolitan areas with a combined population of 300 million people.
